I hate to be repetitive but here is another good signal generator bought on E-Bay. The seller said this device worked but had a long warm up time as far as the display coming on and slow output indication. This always scares potential bidders when mention is made that it needs repair. Bidders gave up at around $80 and I got it for $88 plus $20 shipping. The service and user manual was found on the web for free and soon had it on the workbench to check it out. It did take about ten minutes or more to come on and stabilize and from previous experiences over the years, I went straight to the power supply board. Sure enough, the 15 volt buss slowly came from 8 to almost 15 volts after turning it on from a long rest. After taking a look with my oscilloscope, I found a rather large 120 Hz ripple trace and by temporarily placing the same value electrolytic capacitor across the 15 volt buss, the ripple disappeared and the output indications looked good. That was it, a $2.00 capacitor which I already had in my parts drawer gave me a well functioning generator. It may not be as stable as the HP8640B but has very good calibrated attenuators which comes is handy when checking receiver sensitivity. The circuit boards are laid out for easy troubleshooting and has good shielding. One feature it has is to be able to lock on a signal or it's harmonic when injected in a connector in the rear.
