The HP5340A frequency counter was acquired on E-Bay, as-is for $150 and the only problem encountered was a flickering LED display. My trusty oscilloscope showed a dirty voltage feeding the display board and had to replace an electrolytic capacitor in the power supply which brought it back to life. This has to be one of the better counters made over the years and what makes it ideal is the fact it accepts a 10 MHz reference input where I use the Z3801A GPS disciplined oscillator for that purpose. When checking a frequency at 10 GHz, adjustments can be made to get the oscillator right on such as 10.368000 GHz. Having the service and user manuals are a must with older equipment and usually any problem can be fixed by using generic parts to replace exotic part numbers that HP used at the time. The sensitivity of this counter makes it easy to readout my signal generator as I calibrate radios as far as getting them on frequency. This counter is able to read out a carrier frequency even on a modulated signal.
